Uses
Originally inspired by Wes Bos’ uses page, this is a summary of my current hardware and software setup.
Software
- My text editor of choice is Visual Studio Code. I run Night Owl by Sarah Drasner as my theme and Dank Mono as my font.
- For note taking and task management, I rely on Obsidian.
- Raycast handles my macOS automation, including text expansion, scripts, and quick app access.
- Karabiner-Elements powers my hyper key (
Ctrl+Alt+Command+Shift), which I bind toCaps Lockand hook up to shortcuts across the OS and Raycast. - My main browser is Zen, a Firefox-based browser with a clean UI. I keep Safari and Chrome around for testing.
- For email, I’m on Proton Mail. Great privacy features without sacrificing UX. I’d also recommend Proton VPN if privacy is a priority.
- Figma is my go-to for design work and creating SVGs. It’s cross-platform and makes sharing designs easy.
Hardware
- My main machine is a MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2021 Apple M1 Max with 32GB of memory and 1TB storage.
- For typing, I have the Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (British English) in Space Grey. Previously used a Logitech G613.
- I’ve switched to an Apple Magic Trackpad 2. The Logitech MX Master S2 is the most comfortable mouse I’ve ever used, but I’ve grown to prefer the trackpad. Both are solid choices.
- Alongside the MacBook’s screen, I have 2 LG 4K displays: one in portrait mode (scaled to 1440x2560), one in landscape (scaled to 2560x1440). The MacBook serves as a third screen, mostly for Slack and music.
- For headphones, I use Apple AirPods Pro 3. Great sound, solid noise cancelling, and seamless switching between devices.
- On my desk I have a Grey Audio Pro T5 Bluetooth speaker for when I’m not wearing headphones. Great sound and sleek design.
- For recording, I have Scarlett 2i2 and Scarlett Solo audio interfaces. They improve audio quality significantly and make recording and editing much easier.
- My microphone is a RØDE NT1-A.
- On the music side: a Roland TD-17KVX2 drum kit with a Gibraltar double bass pedal, a Yamaha P-125 electronic piano, an Ibanez BTB670 4-string active bass with an Ibanez WH10 wah pedal, a Fender CD-140SCE electro-acoustic guitar, and a Fender Rumble 25 bass amp (which I also use for the drums).
